How Technology Is Changing the Roofing Industry

Ten years ago things were much different. Having already been five years in to the new millennium, technology had been shaping the way we communicate, find businesses, and manage our priorities. Since then, technology has essentially overtaken every aspect of our lives. And the roofing industry is changing with it.

These days, technology is able to make everyone’s life easier. Sure, there are some setbacks, but, for the most part, technology is doing exactly what it is meant to do: Simplify every day tasks and enable us to reach out further than ever before. In regards to the roofing industry – both internally and from a consumer standpoint – things are becoming more straightforward, allowing contractors to focus more on construction and less on planning, marketing and communicating with customers.

For one, websites have transformed from minimalistic web pages with mostly text-based content, to much more robust, yet user-friendly, mediums. Whereas in the past, websites did little more than help promote your business, customers can, these days, find all the answersthey’re looking for with a few clicks and swipes. Want to know where you can find the best flat roof contractor in the Lansing, Michigan area? No problem. A simple Google search will turn up results galore allowing you to do your own research quickly and efficiently.

Even the process of choosing and building a roof has been simplified thanks to the power of ease of technology. Software that allows contractors to visualize their plans and present them accordingly to their clients is just one way that technology has begun to reshape the industry. 3D rendering is another. Have you ever watched any home improvement shows on networks like HGTV or DIY? You’ve probably noticed contractors using their iPads to show off their renderings, of which allows their clients to visually finalize the plans and move forward. Ten years ago, while there had been software like this existing at that time, the options were scarce and the capabilities were minimal.

Technology has become the staple of our generation. It’s infiltrated every aspect of our lives, and therefore made many tasks much easier. Roofing has not gone unaffected. While many industries are far behind the pack, roofing has proven to be an early adopter of new technologies, allowing for quick adaptation of plans and custom contract work for all. So the next time you look up at that beautiful roof, you can thank technology for its role in its construction.

Home Decor for Manly Men: Attractive Room Decor Without Pastels

Home decor has popularly been the province of women. However, there are plenty of men who want a unified theme to their home, but don’t go in for pastels or knick-knacks. What’s a manly man to do? Especially if he likes sports, guns and girls?

Don’t be caught alone in the decorating section of your local bookstore; people will only mock you. Instead, dip into a manly magazine. Some of the best ideas can come from mags like Stuff, Maxim and Men’s Health – look for articles & photos that feature the male in his ideal environment and see if you like any of the decorating schemes.

Floors

Wood, stone, tile or carpets in a dark or neutral shade are your best bets. When in doubt, choose the more testosterone-fueled floor covering. If you want easy-clean, consider wood or tile. Carpets should be stain-resistant and not require much in the way of care.

Walls

Paint in a neutral shade if you don’t really want to think about this. Red, blue and green are all colors that can impart different kinds of male energy. Red is a powerful color, evoking energy and passion. Blue is calming, but solid. Green is akin to blue, but is associated more with nature and the outdoors. Camouflage, while definitely manly, is too busy to make it a recommended color for walls.

There are other wall options for the manly man. Many wallpapers out there that reflect hobbies, work and a certain masculine appeal. Paneling is another option. Of course, you can always plaster the walls with pictures of cars, 38-point bucks and scantily-clad women, which makes their color more of an academic argument.

Windows

The masculine mind will derive great comfort from drapes that complement the color of the walls. Wooden blinds are also good. If all else fails, get the plainest curtain that you can find, or a blanket that has some kind of manly message on it, like “Harley Davidson Motorcycles”.

Appliances

Luckily, these come in basic white and black most of the time. Black is more of a manly color, but since white is acceptable everywhere, your masculinity shouldn’t be called into question. Every leisure room should have a refrigerator for refreshing beverages.

Furniture

Wood, metal and leather are your choices. High quality leather is actually one of the best materials for keeping clean – wiping up the remnant of Sunday football games becomes less of a hassle. Comfort is of prime importance; who cares if your couch costs a lot if it totally relaxes you at the end of a hard working day? Think of what you want your furniture to do – do you have a lot of friends coming over and lots of beer drinking? Choose something that can accommodate this.

Think big. Big is manly and more comfortable for a large frame. Size is imperative when choosing a TV, computer and surround sound system. Fewer larger things in a room is better than more smaller things. Keep it simple!

Art

There are many choices in art for manly men: trophy bucks, record-sized mounted fish, sports trophies and memorabilia. Consider model cars, planes or military vehicles. Rifles and fishing rods are other recommended items of decor. Weapons are great conversation pieces as well, especially if you have accurate replicas of ancient war tools.

Decorating need not be torture for the manly man. It only requires that you know what you like and apply it to your living space. After all, that’s what it’s there for!

Roof Hail Damage – 4 Tips for Homeowners

The storm has come and gone, did your home suffer any Roof Hail Damage? Hail storms are capable of producing hailstones up to 6″ in diameter. These balls of ice fall from the sky with no regard to your roof. The larger a hailstone is, the faster it will fall , potentially causing more damage to your home.

Many factors play into how much damage a hail stone may cause. Size of the hail, wind speed and direction are only a few pieces of the puzzle. The age of your roof’s shingles, the type of shingles and if your shingles are “impact-resistant” can all factor in to the severity of your roof hail damage.

Damage to your roof’s shingles can compromise the effective life of your roof and even if not immediately visible, may lead to large scale problems if not identified in a timely manner. Here are a few tips which will help you properly identify roof hail damage.

Tip #1: Is there any visible damage on the inside of your home? If you see water stains or slow drips on the inside of your home, then you have a problem which requires immediate attention. A new water stain on your ceiling is most definitely a sign that your roof was compromised. If left untreated, the problem will worsen leading to further damage which may require a complete tear-off of your existing roof, not to mention repairs to the interior of your home.

Tip #2 Are there any visible dents (blisters) on your roof’s shingles? Just because you don’t see any damage to the inside of your home does not mean your roof was not damaged. When there is no visible damage to the inside of your home, it may provide a false sense of security. By neglecting exterior damage, you run the risk of damage to your home in the months to come. Even worse is if you don’t file an insurance claim within the time guidelines stipulated in your homeowner’s insurance policy, you may lose benefits that you are entitled to now.

Identifying shingle blisters requires a visible inspection of your roof. Sometimes blisters may be hard to see. It can be helpful to look for small dings on metal or aluminum vents, downspouts or gutters. It is typically easier to identify these marks than blisters on your shingles. If you believe you have visible evidence of damage, it is suggested that you contact your insurance agent immediately to express your concerns and to find out what your policy covers and the procedures necessary to file an insurance claim.

Tip #3 Get your own independent professional opinion. There’s no denying when a hail storm has blown through town. The National Weather Service records all storm data. If there is knowledge of a storm, and you contact your insurance company, they will most likely dispatch an adjuster. That adjuster represents your insurance company. His job is to identify damage, assess the cost to repair or replace your roof and make sure all of the paperwork is in order to process a claim.

It is suggested that you contact a local roofing company that is trained in roof hail damage for an independent opinion prior to your insurance adjustor performing their inspection. Your roofing company is capable of representing your interests. They should be willing to provide you an inspection and estimate to repair any damages free of charge. More importantly, they should be willing to back up their estimate and make themselves available for mutual consultation with the insurance adjuster. If the adjuster and roofer can agree on the remedy for the damage and the cost, this can expedite the process. In most cases your roofer will be awarded the repair job.

Tip #4 Get It In Writing. Most insurance companies will only issue a check directly to the roofer. This protects the insurance company from the homeowner “pocketing” the proceeds and never repairing the damage. By getting your roofing contractor to agree to the type of repairs to be performed and the costs involved, this will insure that your roof gets the required repairs. If your roofer agrees that the insurance check is sufficient to repair your roof hail damage, then they should be willing to do the repairs for that cost, nothing more.

Roof replacement or repair due to hail damage can be one of the most expensive repairs for homeowners and insurance companies. Making sure that you properly identify roof hail damage in a timely basis, and following the proper procedures will help protect your family’s most important asset, your home.

In summary home owners who think they may have suffered storm damage should:

– Look for visible water damage inside your home.

– Look for damage to your roof’s shingles that may compromise the effective life of your roof.

– If necessary, contact your insurance agent and file a claim.

– Consult a local roofing contractor trained in Roof Hail Damage to represent your interests

Benefits of Using a Fink Truss in your Roof Design

When planning to do renovations or constructing a new building, you can decide to use a fink truss on the roofing plan. There are very many people who are opting out for this option as there are a number of benefits that are associated to the fink truss such as:

Precision fit with Fink Truss Design

A Fink Truss is normally designed with accuracy where one is sure to get one that will fit the building properly without any problem. They are also very reliable and can be used all year round regardless of the weather conditions because they stay in good condition for long periods of time.

Less labor

It is possible to order fink trusses that have already been manufactured. This means that one does not have to go through the stress of having to make them from scratch. This makes construction work more bearable and faster as all one has to do is erect it in the right place and they are good to go. This also helps to cut down on costs as one does not have to employ extra workers that will deal with the fink truss.

Increased production and efficiency

One does not have to worry about wasting a lot of precious time on construction work when using a fink truss design as they normally lead to enhanced production and efficiency in the work place. This is because the components of the roof usually come ready to install. Most of them also come with simple to follow instructions that can be used by a person assembling the fink truss design for the first time without breaking a sweat. This also helps as no time is wasted on framing. It is a proven fact that a builder can come up with 3 component homes that are exactly the same with each stick built home.

Guaranteed performance with Fink Truss Designs

With a fink truss you don’t have to play a guessing game as to whether they will work or not as they have been used on a number of buildings without any complaints. They are also very strong as they are normally made from high quality material to ensure they serve the user for the longest time possible. There is also no need to worry as the fink truss is made in such a way that they withstand all national and local building code necessities. This means they can be used on any frame regardless of the level of complexity.  The components of the fink truss designs are also cheaper when compared with the material used for convectional framing: they do not lead to waste on the site which can cost the builder a huge amount of money that will be used for cleanup.

When you combine all the benefits of using the fink truss design it can be considered as the best option for the roofing system as they are ideal for additional, renovations or new constructions.

Tips to Typhoon-Proof Your Home

Destructive natural forces like typhoons can destroy things in a short time. Even your precious home can be wiped out if it is not strong enough to withstand the harsh conditions. To protect your home and family from hurricane hazards, it is best to make the structuresturdier before the storm season hits. Here are some tips on how to typhoon-proof your house:

The garage door is one of the main defenses of the house. Once it gets destroyed, the rain and strong winds will easily penetrate your home, putting yourself and your belongings in jeopardy. Use a garage door that is perfect for hurricane weather, preferably one that is made of aluminum or galvanized steel. Wooden garage doors are not advisable for houses along a typhoon belt because the material rots with heavy exposure to water.

Your windows must be strong enough to protect your family from flying debris. Installing impact-resistant windows keeps you safe. Buy windows with built-in locks that provide stability despite strong winds. You should also attach steel or aluminum storm shutters for added protection.

The roof should be able to prevent rainwater from leaking into your home. Gable roofs are best for houses located in regions that frequently encounter typhoons. Their angled faces are good for deflecting wind and water. The angles also provide natural draining mechanisms so rain does not collect on top of the roof. Several New Jersey roofers and other contractors located throughout the country can install quality gable roofs to storm-proof houses.

In states like New Jersey roofing experts recommend the installation of gutters that are capable of draining large amounts of rainwater and snow. Prolonged exposure to moisture severely weakens the roof—when this happens, it is only a matter of time before other structural components follow. Select gutter materials that are lightweight, durable, and has anti-rust properties.

Sidings are essential tools for typhoon-proofing your house. These materials protect the walls from severe weather elements. If you want durable yet affordable siding for the storm season, purchaseNew Jersey vinyl siding and similar products from other reliable manufacturers. Vinyl sidings can last for a long time despite exposure to harsh weather.

The fireplace for interior decor, used from medieval time

The fireplace for interior decor is not a new thing. The fireplace for interior decor has been used from medieval times especially by people in higher classes. The fireplace was designed with a fireplace mantel that had to catch the smoke from the fire. In these days, the models of fireplaces and mantels developed from what they used to be and people build them just for decoration to give the room an elegant style. The fireplace and the mantels are now built just for their unique style and they do not have the same functions as they did in the past. In the beginning, fireplaces were built exactly in the center of the room because people wanted to heat that particular room. In time, people found new place for the fireplace: near one of the walls. It had more practical features near the wall because they could also build a mantel up to the roof that was able to get the smoke out of the room. Also, with the fireplace near the wall, the room next to the one that had the fireplace could also be heated because the walls became warmer.

In time, other forms of heating were discovered new ways for heating and people did not need to light up the fireplace with wood. At some point, even if the fireplace had no point in existing any more in a house, people still created them because they thought it gives the room a particular aspect. And they were right. So, people built fireplaces and mantles only for interior design finding new and unique designs for their own rooms. Because these were used in almost any area on earth, the designs were always different. Some even thought of carving figures in the mantles. Some of them had the shape and also the size of a human body. At first they were built only from wood because it was easier to carve them. But, to give a spectacular air to the room designers used marble and limestone to create fireplaces and mantels.

People said that not everyone can build such a fireplace because only someone with skills and vision can create something that will last in time. And they were right on this one too. Some even said that this is art and those that create it must be admired. Different people mean different styles and all around the world designers try to improve their work. The wood mantel is generally easier to design but people nowadays try to find different material to build the fireplaces as well as mantels because they want to overcome their previous ones and the material is also very important when building the fireplace and the chimney. Some people say that a book must be written regarding fireplaces and chimneypieces for other people to understand particular things regarding mantels and fireplaces. No one can become over night if they decide to be a designer for them because it takes skills and also a lot of experience and vision.

How to know when you absolutely need to replace your metal roof

People who have chosen a metal roof installation have done so because they want a roof that can withstand the elements and have a long life expectancy. However, there will come a time when homeowners who have opted for a metal roof will have to assess the condition of their roof and decide whether it needs to be replaced. Here are few things to look for which will tell you that your metal roof absolutely needs to be replaced!

Excessive rust

The majority of metal roofs that are installed today are treated with a rustproof coating, but this coating does not offer a lifetime guarantee and can degrade over time resulting in the formation of rust on your metal roof. Excessive rusting on a metal roof can look extremely unsightly and can detract from an otherwise well-kept property. While rusting can be addressed with a rust treatment, you may find that it is more cost effective to replace the entire metal roof than it is to have the rust continually treated year after year.

Weakening of the roof

Generally, metal roofs have much longer life spans that other roofing materials and you can expect up to 100 years of service from a good quality metal roof. Having said this, gradually your metal roof will experience a certain amount of deterioration. This is generally due to exposure to varying weather conditions especially if they are at the more severe end of the spectrum. Excessive rust that is left untreated can also cause your metal roof to weaken and result in the formation of holes in the roof and in these instances a full metal roof replacement is the only option.

Leaks

Metal roofs are fastened together using bolts and screws and when these bolts and screws become loose or break away altogether, then this can cause leaks to occur. Whether it is a residential or commercial property, leaks are a headache you can do without as water damage is not only unattractive but it can cost you too! Leaks can be repaired but if they are excessive or if there are many areas in your metal roof that are leaking, it can be more economical and better value for money to have a full roof replacement carried out instead.

Make sure that you have a full and comprehensive assessment of your metal roof carried out periodically which will alert you to any issues arising. This will help you make a fully informed decision with regard to the replacement of your metal roof, when the time comes.

Home Decoration Ideas for Thrill-Seekers!

The mantra to keep home decoration fresh and relevant is letting that wicked thing inside you kick for a while. Jot down all the ideas that come streaming out of your mind. Once you have a reliable list of about 10 fresh ideas, sit down with a hot cup of chocolate and censor ideas based on their propriety and achievability. Some ideas might scare the living holiness out of your neighbors, but that is what we intend to achieve. Boring ideas need a jolt to revive and a few days in such odd circumstances is bound to bring better ideas to the fore.

For the chicken hearted!

Chicken hearted? No, not entirely. Most of us are quite sane to even try unorthodox ideas to wipe out the dreary, crappy, crummy, stinking old home decoration ideas that our grandparents propounded. Nevertheless, with a little innovation these old home decoration techniques will prove worthy of their mettle.

An insanely easy idea is to make insanely wicked pots for your home garden. Pots do not have to be of the traditional tubular design; there are creative pot makers who like to think out of the box. Open your phone directory or search the Internet for potters who specialize in shaping customized pots. Don’t you have any terrace to place a few daffodils or daylilies?

Do not worry; get rid of a few sofas and sitting arrangements and place big flower pots with fresh perennials in it. Buy designer luxury cots for home decoration and place them on embroidered cotton carpets for better insulation and warmth. Try accessorizing the walls with Indian handmade wall art hangings to complete the natural look and feel of your organic home.

Planning the home decoration:

Change the look of your garage or staircase if you can manage to eke out some space without sacrificing functionality of the garage or safety on the staircase. The average width of stairs in most Indian or American homes is perfect for placing designer area rugs, but utmost care must be taken to affix the rugs firmly to the ground to prevent slips or trips on the staircase.

Planning home decoration will require some time and research. Take a couple days leave at your office and research the internet for fresh ideas and online sellers of traditional Indian homemade home decoration items such as area rugs, carpets and furniture linens

Tips to reduce cost of constructing buildings in kenya

TIPS TO REDUCE COST OF CONSTRUCTING BUILDINGS IN KENYA

Building materials costs keep rising day by day as the cost of production increases.
This necessitates for developers to think outside the box to reduce the cost of construction.
www.a4architect.com uses several methods to reduce this cost through architectural designintervention.

These methods are as follows:

Use of unique building technology for foundation:

New technology whereby reinforced concrete use is minimized and replaced by masonry stone saves a lot of costs. This method is only suitable for low-rise buildings such as bungalows.
For high-rise structures, careful structural design is utilized so as to have the most optimum foundation design type to ensure less material is excavated.

Use of locally manufactured finishes.

www.a4architect.com specifies material finishes from products that are made locally. In most cases, locally manufactured products are cheaper than their imported counterparts since their transport costs are not as huge and they do not come with import duty.

Such local product alternatives are as follows:

• ‘Mazeras’ slate stone floor finishes instead of imported ceramic tiles.
• uPVC in replacement of steel casement windows.
• Local Block board and TnG doors in replacement of imported mdf doors.
• Locally produced paints.
• Clay brick roof tiles instead of steel ‘mabati’ tiles.

Such materials are best used together with other local materials to enhance their aesthetic appeal. For example, Mazeras floor tiles can be patterned together with clay brick tiles to come up with an exciting design.
See picture below .

Use of innovative Architectural design.

Architectural designs that reduce the wastage in terms of unnecessary circulation space are utilized to bring the cost of construction down.

Corridor spaces are reduced and doors are placed at the most optimum location to ensure that all space within the house is fully utilized. This saves the developer from constructing unnecessary space that will increase the cost of construction.

Roof Design
Use of architectural design that reduces the amount of roof truss that is used to support the roof material is also important.
The house is designed such that the room walls extend upwards to support the roof truss hence reducing the amount of timber required for roofing.

Vista Windows
Use of windows that extend from wall top to bottom also helps reduce the overall cost of construction in that glass is cheaper than wall including finishes. Glass costs approximately KES 1,000 per square meter while the wall costs approximately KES 1,000 per square meter plus plaster of approximately KES 350 per square meter plus painting of approximately KES 300 per square meter. This totals to around KES 1,650 per square meter.

Conclusion.
There are many methods that www.a4architect.com employ to reduce the overall construction cost of a house. These are best brought out through the design process to actual construction project management.

SELECTING ROOFING MATERIAL FOR YOUR HOUSE IN KENYA

SELECTING ROOFING MATERIAL FOR YOUR HOUSE IN KENYA

There are various factors that determine which kind of roof to use for your house.

CLIMATE

In hot desert-like climates where rainfall is low, flat roofs are very common. Areas such as North-Africa have alot of these roofs. A flat roof is not eactly’flat’.

It usually slopes at an angle of 5 to 10 degrees. This angle can not be noticed easily and helps to drain water during cleaning or after rainy weather. In traditional African societies, communities living in Arid areas of Kenya such as Maasai, Samburu had their shelters made of flat roofs.

This is because rain is not common in thses areas. In rainy climates, the roof becomes steep. In snowy regions such as Northern Europe, the roof is very steep[over 45 degrees] so as to drain away snow. In traditional African societies which live in rainy regions such as Kisii,Mount Kenya and Coast, the thatch roof is very steep[over 60 degrees] so as to increase the surface runnoff of rain water.

COST

Roofing materials vary depending on the budget. In Kenya, thatch roof is the cheapest at KES 180 per square meter. It is followed by Iron sheets. The thinnest grade in the market at the moment is Gauge 32 which costs about KES 210 per square meter.

Gauge 30 costs about KES 240 per square meter and Gauge 28 pre-painted costs approximately kes 500 per square meter. Concrete roofng tiles cost around KES 400 per square meter.

Clay roofing tiles cost around KES 630 per square meter at Mombasa.

These have the advantage of being light-weight and since they are made of natural clay with no added paint, their rain-watter runnoff can be consumed without any health issues as compared to the others wheich have paint .

Paint contains Lead which is harmful to the human body. Stone coated steel roofing tiles such as Harvey, Decra are in the range of the most expensive and cost approximately KES 1500 per square meter.

These are usually gauge 26 in thickness and hence give a lifetime guarantee. Their light weight also gives savings to the timber supporting trusses which will be less than when supporting heavier concrete tiles.

THEME DESIGN AND SHAPE OF THE ROOF

Curved and cylindrical roofs require special types of materials such as copper and bituminous felts. These felts can take the shape of the roof easily. Copper felt is expensive. This is usually copper in colour when new and turns greenish as it ages.

Hipped roofs are best laid using tiles since with tiles, there will be less cutting and hence less wastage. Some steel roofing suppliers in Kenya can supply curved roofs. Gable roofs can be done using any type of roofing products. Some buildings such as Highlands restaurant at Afya Centre, Nairobi have glass roofs.

These give nice views but are expensive to put up. A square meter of 10mm structural glass costs approximately kes 2,800. The steepness of the roof can also be used to control cost. The more steep the roof, the more the surface area and hence the more the cost. Some roofing tiles such as Mangalore design require steep roofs to make sure that the rain water surface runnoff is fast and hence no leakages.

Recreational facilities such as tourist lodges which require rustic natural finishes will opt for the thatch roofs which can be patterned to various designs.

Decorating our homes with Christmas stuff such as commercial planters or pots, colorful lights, and Christmas trees is also part of the tradition. As the neighborhood lights up with different colors of sparkling lights, the spirit of Christmas becomes more alive and the people is filled up with positive mood.

Modern Planters For Christmas

Home exteriors will never be complete without plants and flowers. In dressing up our home’s exterior for Christmas, using modern planters will enhance the beauty and charm of our plants and flowers. Most commercial planters have contemporary designs that can perfectly go well with your entire Christmas decoration.

Large planters can also hold tall plants and even trees so you may want to include them in your Christmas-themed exterior. Make your front doors more inviting with sleek and tall contemporary planters adorned with cascading vines or pretty flowers.

Adding window planter boxes is another great way to beautify your home’s exterior. If you use it in your windows up stairs, you will have a more balanced Christmas decoration outdoors. Poinsettia flowers will definitely look good on them specially if you add Christmas balls and ribbons.

Lighting

One of the typical decorations that symbolize the Christmas season is the colorful lights. There are several types of Christmas lights that we can use. They can are usually put on the Christmas tree but you can also place them on your plants, commercial planters, window planter boxes, tree trunks, and on the pillars of your porch or front doors. Some people would even compose an outline of a snowman, Sta. Claus, or other figures and trace them with Christmas lights.

There are other forms of lighting that you can use for your Christmas decorations. Internally-lit modern planters in different colors can be a stylish way to light your pathway. Christmas lanterns would also look great on your patio or porch.

A Christmas tree can be placed inside the house or outside. Small Christmas trees can be placed in contemporary planters and line them outside your house. Also, putting a large one outside your house can be a wonderful centerpiece in your garden or lawn. The most important thing is to feel the essence of Christmas and be inspired of the positive vibes that it brings.

Tips for Planning the Buildings on Your Horse Property

The Stables

This is arguably the most important structure that you can have on any horse property, as it is the building that will shelter your horses–and other people’s horses, if you’re planning on running a boarding stable. The size of the structure and the number of the stalls you will need will depend on your plans for the property.

If you simply intend to keep your own 2 horses on the property, then you only need a small structure with 2 stalls, and perhaps a few extras in case you decide to expand your herd. On the other hand, if you plan on running a boarding stable, you will need a large structure with many stalls. You should plan to have at least a dozen available stalls in order to have a successful business, but you can build more if needed.

You will also need to decide what other rooms you want built into the stables. Many horse owners like to have easy access to their tack, grooming supplies, and horse feed when they need them. For this reason, it may be good to build a feed room and tack room into the stables.

Ensure that the stalls are all spacious enough for the horses, with room enough for them to eat, drink, move around, and lie down. You should also have a large alleyway between the stalls with designated areas for tacking up and grooming horses.

Exercise Arenas

Exercise arenas and round pens are necessary for any horse property, but they can take up valuable pasture space. However, it is a necessary sacrifice, as you need to find a large stretch of completely flat land to build these structures; grazing, on the other hand, can be done on hilly pastures.

Erect sturdy fences around all of these arenas, with gates that latch securely. If you wish to have a covered riding arena, you will also need to erect tall, sturdy support beams and a secure roofing material over the area. This will allow you to ride or exercise your horses even in rainy weather.

Hay Barn

Though you may have a feed room in the stables, many horse properties also build a hay barn nearby. This is primarily for those properties that have a large number of horses. Having such a structure allows you to purchase large amounts of hay at once to feed the herd on your property, and gives you a place to store all of the extra feed that won’t fit in your feed room.

Your hay barn doesn’t need to be extremely large or fancy. You simply want a roof and walls to keep out any wind and rain that could spoil the hay. However, this can be made simply out of corrugated metal sheets; this will be effective but cheap.

Bathing Area

One final thing to consider is a bathing area for your horses. Most horse owners don’t like to hose their horses down in the stable area, as it can make the alleyway muddy and messy. Instead, simply have a concrete slab poured in an area near the stables, and put poles on at least 1 side that will allow the horses to be tied up for their bathing. Of course, you’ll want to make sure that there is a spigot nearby so that you can actually attach a hose and give the horses baths.

What is a stretch ceiling system?

A Stretch Ceiling is a suspended ceiling system consisting of two basic components – a perimeter profile and a lightweight Polyvinyl chloride membrane which stretches and clips into the track. In addition to ceilings, the system may also be used to create wall applications, ceiling and wall murals, suspended 3-D panels, or freestanding features. They can be given virtually any shape. Stretch Ceiling Systems allow the incorporation of all types of light fixtures, grilles, sprinklers, etc by the use of proprietary background support.

These amazing ceilings can be installed almost anywhere, come in a wide variety of colors for stretch ceilings and are made from an eco-friendly material.

Easy Tips to Help Safeguard the Integrity of Your Roof

A damaged roof can easily crush the beauty of your house. The contemporary façade and the manicured lawns will be rendered ineffective if the roof has been neglected. More often than not, to add life to your home, you don’t need to spend a lot of time and money. You can handle most of the roofing (dakwerken) needs. Here are a few tips to help you give your roof a new lease of life.

Examine the roofing materials

The faulty installation of the shingles can result in leaks. Additionally, over time, the shingles may loosen or even get damaged by such things as hailstorms and tree branches brushing over them. You have to make sure that all the shingles are nailed firmly and that none of them are damaged. Every roof renovation (dakrenovatie) project should commence with the inspection of the materials. Be wary of cheap of materials; they have low quality.

Eliminate the leaks

There is nothing that threatens your comfort more than a leak through the roof. Leaks will not only damage the structure of your house but also damage your electronics, furniture and everything else that gets in the way. Regardless of how small a leak is, fix it. Sealing the leakwhile it is still small will help prevent extensive water damage as well as the growth of mold.

Clear the gutters

The purpose of the gutters (dakgoten) is to drain rain water away. This will not happen if they are clogged. Clogs are often caused by dried leaves and debris. This will lead to water build up which can in turn lead to the formation of cracks and even rot. Inspect the gutters regularly and unclog them.

Replace damaged hardware

Missing screws, damaged brackets and fastening as well as inadequate flashing can result in moisture build up. This can cause your roofing materials to deteriorate fast. Replace them as soon as possible.

Apply coating

Applying coating is one of the best roof renovation practices. It will protect the hardware and add life to your roof.

A lot more can be done but you must remember that roof renovation is not an easy fix and is not a job for everyone. Don’t hesitate to hire professional help. Dakwerken Apers has more than 20 years of experience providing quality services in roof renovation in Antwerpen. The team has the right tools to work on any roof type and fix any problem. For expert advice on roofing and quality services in both roof installation and renovation, Dakwerken Apers is one of the best companies you can turn to in Antwerpen.

Points to remember while installing roof safety rails

Many a time, you must have stood on a skyscraper’s roof, placed a hand confidently on the safety rails and thanked them for letting you be safe. But have you ever thought how these railings were installed at such a great height? The chances are high that you did not pay heed to the topic. But now you are thinking about it as you require installing a safety rail at your building’s roof.

The installation task is done by a few trained workers, but safety needs to be prioritized. Now, with the advent of fall protection technology, you can safeguard your installation team from falling victim to any fall hazard. Presently, there are safety tips that need to be followed while the roof safe safety rails in Perth are installed. Let us read up on each of these tips in detail.

Option 1: Installing a parapet railing system

A temporary construction parapet railing system is important while you install a roof safety rails hire in Perth. Such a clamp railing system can be installed using an aerial lift. Plus, you need seeing that each of the workers is trained and experienced in carrying out the required tasks. The installers require wearing harnesses while installation is underway.

Option 2: Bringing anchor points

What if you do not have any aerial lift at your disposal and the installation team needs to be on the very edge of the roof? In that case, you require anchor points. But many do not have anchor points with them (as the construction equipment does not have any work in households or commercial—barring construction—businesses). Which is why, you should convey your construction equipment supplier or theinstallation team to bring anchor points. However, if you need an anchor point, you should go for mobile anchor points. (Some of their types include roofing carts, dead weight anchors and prefabricated horizontal lifelines.)

Option 3: Preinstalling fall protection system on the ground below

You can eliminate any hazard by installing perimeter beams. Every perimeter beam has to be fabricated using horizontal lifelines and stanchions. As and when the beam will be lifted and connected, the anchor points will exist. The horizontal lifelines will be used while the work of steel erection is done and the perimeter cables get installed. Once the steel erection is done and the perimeter cables are attached, you can do away with lifelines and stanchions.

By implementing these tips, you can ensure that the installation work of safety rails is done efficiently, easily and, most importantly, safely.

Eminent Roof Truss Designs

A structure of a building is so important in constructing houses or commercial buildings. The building doesn’t just have to be well-built but it must also be attractive and nice. One that should be meticulously considered in this matter is the roof truss. If one component of a roof truss is detached or damaged, the complete roof could give away.

Sticking to a proper roof truss designs are critical when it comes to roofing a home or building.  Factors that are essential in roof truss designs contain the connection of the parts and the distribution of the load through the truss parts. There are a variety of sizes and shapes that can be modified to go well with nearly any roof design. A pitched truss is the most common type of a roof truss system. It has a triangular shape and is often used in storage buildings and residential homes. It includes a host of specific truss designs from the attic, double bobtail, bowstring, and the fan to scissors, double fink, and inverted shapes.

Some of the best designs of the roof trusses are King Post Truss, Modified King Post, Queen Post Truss, Scissor Truss, Modified Hammer Beam, and Hammer Bean Truss. Wood trusses that are beautifully exposed are ideal to gussy up a house’s great room. Most are designed to carry heavy roof loads and are structural while they look decorative and pleasing to the eye. Any building project can look more beautiful with natural timber trusses.

Roof truss designs that are unique in their structural strength and appearance are made easier to create, not like in the yard that must meet certain basic rules of physical and construction design of a shed roof. Roof beams that are manufactured triangular are proficiently produced by engineers from outside the office with high quality materials. The best designs have the strength to endure large vehicles and minor earthquakes and vibration caused by extreme weather conditions. High Heel Mesh, Abandoned Truss Chords, Armor of Scissors, and Parallel Chord Truss are four types of armor designs. They are very much accepted among builders and designers of new houses and each type has unique features and its advantages.

Metal Roofing: Advantages & Benefits

Metal roofing is a growing choice of roofing material. Metal roofing accounts for about 10-14% of all re-roofing jobs in the United States. Metal roofs are most popular in Southeastern states, like Florida, where tropical storms are a threat. There are several reasons why metal roofs are growing in popularity. First, homeowners are not as transient as they used to be. More and more homeowners are choosing to stay in their homes as they age. Since metal roofs can last more than five decades, homeowners who choose metal roofs know that they won’t need to replace it again. Other reasons include the strength and protection which metal roofs provide, and the greater design options available with meal roofing materials.

Federal Tax Credits for Metal Roofing

If you install a metal roof before December 31, 2010, you may be eligible for a Federal tax credit. You can receive a tax credit for 30% of the cost (up to $1500) for Energy Star metal roofs with pigmented coatings. Before you choose a metal roof, ask your roofer if it contains pigmented coatings. Pigmented coatings increase the energy efficiency of metal roofs.

Longevity

Metal roofs last the longest of any roofing material. Most metal roofing manufacturers offer 50 year warranties for their products. With just a little maintenance, metal roofs can last up to 75 years.

Strength & Durability Benefits

Metal roofs withstand all weather conditions, from large amounts of heavy snow, to hail and high winds. Metal roofs do not rot, which eliminates the possibility for insect damage. Additionally, metal roofs do not absorb water and moisture, crack or peel. They are also resistant to mildew and decay.

Cost Benefits

Metal roofs cost more than most other roofing types. The average costs for metal roofs are: steel shingles – $5,000-$22,000; aluminum shingles – $12,000-$24,000; copper shingles – $25,500 – $39,600. There are many variables that will determine the cost of a new metal roof, including size, material, pitch, accessibility, permits and any special labor costs associated with your roofing project. Homes with metal roofs are known for their higher resale values.

Safety Benefits

One of the greatest advantages of metal roofs is that they are fire-resistant. Unlike wood or asphalt shingled roofs, metal roofs do not burn, adding an additional level of protection for homeowners.

Environmental Benefits

There are several factors that make metal roofing environmentally-friendly. Most metal roofs can beinstalled over an existing roof. Installing a metal roof over an existing roof eliminates waste from a roof tear-off which would otherwise end up in a landfill. Metal roofs are often made from recycled material, and metal roof materials can be recycled.

Energy Efficiency

Metal roofs reflect the sun and block heat transmission from the roof to the interior of a house. A pigment coated metal roof is more energy efficient because it creates a cooler home, due to the reflective pigments within in the finish.

Design Benefits

There are many color choices and design schemes available in metal roofing materials. Painted metal is available in almost any color. There are two types of metal roofs: standing seam metal roofs and corrugated metal roofs. Standing seam metal roofs are made up of interlocking metal panels that are placed vertically from the ridge of the roof to the eaves. Corrugated metal roofing is corrugated or rippled sheets of metal. These two metal roof types create different appearances. Depending on your design preference, you can choose the wavy appearance of a corrugated metal roof or the flat, vertical appearance of standing seam metal roofing.

Recycle Old Garage Doors Into New Treasures

These days, recycling is understood to be vital for the survival of the planet.  Old garage doors pose a disposal problem in that they are large and heavy and are made of materials that do not decompose.  Even wooden garage doors are treated and sealed to maintain strength and beauty over many years of use.  Because they take up a significant amount of space in a landfill, individuals who attempt to dispose of old garage doors may face hefty disposal fees.  Many companies that offer garage door service now include complimentary removal and recycling of old doors, often free of charge with garage door replacement.  However, a creative homeowner may choose to keep the used doors and get creative with recycling options.

A great way to recycle used garage doors that are no longer wanted is to take them to builder supply re-use stores, such as the Habitat for Humanity Restores.  A donation to a Habitat Restore counts as a charitable donation for tax purposes, keeps the doors out of landfills, helps Habitat for Humanity raise funds with which to build homes, and offers the doors up for a minimal price to persons seeking inexpensive, used garage doors.

Used garage doors can easily be cleaned, painted, and even dressed up with decorative hardware and used on outbuildings like sheds and greenhouses.  The doors can be hung and used just like on a vehicle storage garage, complete with electronic door openers.  They can also be used as walls for building small tool sheds.  Keep in mind that the neighbors may not like the look of a shed made out of mismatched, used garage doors.  A clever paint job should help pretty things up.

Using paint to give an old door an all new look opens up a whole new list of uses for the recycled material.  The doors can also be used whole or in pieces as roofing for out buildings.  A couple sections of an old door can be decorated and used as a roof for a child’s playhouse.  Or, use prettily painted metal door sections to build creative planters for flowers and vegetables.  Using recycled metal garage doors as planters set around the garage entry and to beautify the driveway is a creative use that will impress friends and neighbors.

Many old wooden garage doors have carved sections and decorations.  An attractive old wooden door makes an original and lovely headboard for a bed.  Wooden doors can also be used in sections as unique wainscoting for interior decorating.  Treated and sealed wooden doors can also be cut or separated into sections and used as landscaping materials, or put hinges on them and use them as fence gates.

Before throwing a replaced garage door away or having it hauled off for recycling by the garage door service, consider the many uses around the home and yard that recycled metal and wood can come in handy for.  If nothing else, securing a used door to the back of a garden shed creates a wonderful outdoor canvas for children to paint murals on.  If nothing comes to mind, donating them to charitable resellers of building supplies benefits many people.

Decorating Tips for Your Tiki Hut Bar

So you have plans on building a tiki hut bar out in your yard, by your pool or in the corner of your den. Thats good news because now more then ever in past years, the materials to do so are far easier to acquire. Remember that in the end it still has to function as a working bar.

Sure Bamboo Looks Great

To begin with, don’t assume that you have to build everything out of bamboo. Sure bamboo looks great but it can be a very difficult building material to work with. Its hard to cut, prone to cracking and  will fade to gray when exposed to sun or outside moist air.

Rope Wrapping on Posts

One great design idea that you can see in the beach front “palapas” in Mexico is to solidly wrap any posting, usually metal piping, with natural fiber rope. It looks fantastic and no one will ever suspect what is underneath.

That Rustic Look

As far as counter tops go in a tiki hut bar, it is important that they have a rustic look and feel. The problem with older distressed and weathered wood though is that it too is difficult to work with. It’s prone to cracking and it is also hard to find a good supply that will match up properly.

The Art of Antiquing

Call around in your community and see if you can find anyone in a cabinet or antique repair shop that can give you some  hints on “antiquing” or “distressing” wood. It’s a bit of an art form but it will allow you to buy new wood for your bar top that still has the rustic look.

Look Online for Your Tiki Bar Decorations

Locating bar stools for your tiki hut bar can be a problem in your local community. Your best bet is to look online, because that is where you are going to find the best selection. You can also find some great tiki style decorations online too, such as chunks of old fishing net and cheeky maritime nick-knacks

Facts about the Simple Gambrel Roof Design

The Gambrel roof design is one of the best roof styles that you can choose to use on almost any type of building.

The gambrel is distinctive for its double slopes on each side of the roof.   In all Gambrel Roof design, the upper slopes on each side are relatively shallow, while the lower slopes are very steep.   Such a design, gives the Gambrel roof the ability to provide tons of space for extra storage or even living areas.

On to the Gambrel Roof Design

The pitches and angles of the slopes of a gambrel roof can vary considerably allowing the building to be tall or short in appearance.

If you are handy, you can easily build a small gambrel roof yourself with ease.  This is convenient as one does not have to call in professionals to do the work for them. You, however, have to be ready to deal with a lot of dovetail joints, ridge and purlin beams. The first thing you have to do is come up with the frames for the Gambrel roof design. Make sure you get the measurements right so that you don’t waste time coming up with something that will not fit.

Planning your Gambrel Roof Design

Before you start on the Gambrel roof design, you need to spend a lot of time on the planning process to make work easier when it comes to the actual construction. This involves a lot of scale drawing to come up with a plan that will make efficient use of the materials you have and one that will look good on the building. Never go ahead with something that you are not too sure about as it could lead to regrets later on. Instead, seek help with professionals who are conversant with the Gambrel roof design to be on the safe side.

Layouts of the Gambrel Roof

When you have the correct Gambrel roof design, it is time for the cut- outs and layouts.  This is where you have to make a full size gambrel layout. This is best done on level ground as it makes works much easier. You can use stakes to mark the locations of the rafters. Lay out the beams in their correct positions marking the angles and lengths that will be used for cutting. This gives you the rafters that will be used for the Gambrel roof design.

Finally, saw the rafters together to come up with the trusses that will be used for the Gambrel roof design. These are normally bound together using metal straps, doglegs and triangles to make the gambrel frame sturdy. The next step involves raising the rafters which is considered as one of the toughest phases as a lot of attention and care has to be observed to ensure it is set up right. It is not possible to do this alone and one can get help from a friend or relative. Once it has been set up in the correct way, you can sit back and enjoy the work done on the Gambrel roof design.

Metal Roofing: Advantages & Benefits

is a growing choice of roofing material.

There are two types of metal roofs: standing seam metal roofs and corrugated metal roofs. Standing seam metal roofs are made up of interlocking metal panels that are placed vertically from the ridge of the roof to the eaves. Corrugated metal roofing is corrugated or rippled sheets of metal. These two metal roof types create different appearances. Depending on your design preference, you can choose the wavy appearance of a corrugated metal roof or the flat, vertical appearance of standing seam metal roofing.

What you need to know about corrugated metal roofing

provides a better alternative to your typical asphalt shingles; with the modern manufacturing techniques, metal roofing sheets can be made in such a way that they can easily upscale some of the more costly roofing materials. Apart from the fact that it is lightweight, metal roofing is highly durable and extremely affordable even when you add the costs associated with its professional installation.

Corrugated metal roofing is now being used extensively as the material of choice in both residential as well as other traditional commercial applications. Most homeowners, and especially those who are replacing their roofs, will find metal roofing quite economical and more long-lasting than many other products in the market. Depending on the manufacturer of the metal roofing sheets you are going to install, many metal roofing contractors offering warranties of 50 years to 100 years for their products; when you look at it in another way, you will discover that this is a polite way of giving people a lifetime warranty. The availability of many colors to choose form does not in any way sacrifice on the side of aesthetics to get quality.

Corrugated metal roofing sheets have another great advantage and that is the fact that they are fire resistant. This is therefore an ideal roofing material for people who live in areas where wild fires are a seasonal issue; in many cases these days the installation of metal roofing invites a reduction of homeowner insurance premiums. Similarly, homes that are built along coast will also benefit a great deal from metal roofing; unlike aluminum roofing sheets that react with the salt air to form aluminum oxide, metal roofing sheets come with an extra layer of protection ensuring that they will not easily get affected. Metal roofing sheets are also ideal in environments where string winds and snow accumulation threaten the integrity of roofing materials.

If you live in an area where hail is big problem, you have no better roofing material than metal roofing sheets, and especially corrugated steel sheets. This is because they are less likely to be affected by hail, heavy snow loads, strong winds as well as ice. The same applies also in areas where there are problems associated with termites and other related pests. Rodents and raccoons also will have a hard time damaging metal roofing sheets as they try to make their way into the attic. Similarly, destructive birds such as woodpeckers will not be able to create holes on metal roofing sheets as they search for insects. When you consider all the benefits associated with metal roofing sheets and especially matters to do with durability, you will discover the eventually, metal roofing provides the most cost effective roofing solution.

Garden Arbor Designs – Metal Arbors Vs. Wooden Arbors, Which Is Best?

Adding an arbor to your garden is a quick and easy way to create a focal point within the space and boost your home’s curb appeal.  Arbors are highly customizable, with designs ranging from those that rise up over a gate in a fence, to others that can be built with a bench seat underneath, creating a quiet nook for reading and relaxing in the garden.  If you’ve decided to build or purchase an arbor for your yard, one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is the type of material.  Two popular material choices for garden arbors are metal and wood.  These material types are vastly different, each with their own pros and cons.  In this article, we’ll explore both types of structures and attempt to determine which is best.

Wood is a very classic and natural material choice that has been around since the beginning of time.  There are numerous benefits to wooden arbors, but we want to focus on weatherability, cost, and changeability.  Since wood is a material naturally found outdoors, it makes perfect sense that it weathers well.  Wooden arbors will hold up against sun and rain, without problems of fading or rusting.  Wood is also relatively inexpensive, particularly as compared to metal.  A large wooden arbor can usually be built for around $100 to $150 or purchased as a ready to assemble kit for about $250 to $300.

Wooden arbors are very changeable in appearance.  For example, if you decide to paint your house green, you can always paint your arbor the same color.  Wood is easy to sand down and stain or paint to whatever color or tone you desire.  If you know in advance that you want to paint your arbor, you may want to save yourself some money and use less expensive wood.  However, if you want to leave the wood in its natural state, or cover it with a stain or sealer, you’re probably better off choosing a redwood such as cedar.  Cedar will cost you more up front, but it will last longer because of its natural resistance to rot, decay, and insect infestations.

Next we’ll discuss the primary advantages of metal arbors: longevity, durability, and strength.  If you want to put your money into a garden arbor that will stand the test of time, there is no better material choice than metal.  Unlike wood, you’ll never have to worry about rotting, cracking, splintering, checking, or insect infestations.  One of the keys to the longevity of the structure is the type of metal used.  For low cost and maximum strength, we recommend aluminum.  Steer clear of powder coated steel or iron arbors.  Both of these metals will rust quickly when exposed to the outdoor elements.

Metal arbors are also extremely durable, standing up to strong storms and winds without breaking.  If you live in an area that experiences high winds, a metal arbor is an excellent choice, particularly if you have the ability to sink its feet into cement footings.  The strength of metal is also unmatched, an important consideration if you want to grow a heavy climbing plant up the side of your garden structure.  Wistera vine, for example, is a famously heavy climber known for collapsing wooden decks and porches if it gets too large.  If you want to grow wisteria, or a similarly heavy vine, a metal arbor is again your best choice.

In summary, the type of garden arbor that’s best for you can only be determined by your individual needs.  If cost is the most important determining factor in your decision, wood is a good and inexpensive choice.  On the other hand, if you need something that’s really durable and long lasting, metal may be a better option.  No matter what you choose, your garden arbor will be a welcome addition to your landscape, adding beauty, charm, and curb appeal to your home’s exterior.

The Story Of The Tiki Bar

The image of the care-free tropical island has been with us since long before the 1930’s. During most of the early 20th century, American kids actually read books, and grew up on 18th and 19th century adventure stories by the likes of Jules Verne, many of which featured tropical islands as their settings. Even Robinson Crusoe used to be considered a children’s book, not fodder for college courses.

So, when those kids grew up, the sight of a drinking establishment with actual props such as you would theoretically find in a real-life “tropical paradise” (“tiki masks” and wall-mounted tropical fish) sparked their imaginations. It was the perfect blend of “reality” and fancy. Presumably, the Tiki bars were related to actual Polynesian culture and named after the Maori mythological figure of Tiki, although the connection was pretty tenuous. Add alcohol to the mix, especially fruity “tropical” rum-based drinks with very high alcohol content, such as the Zombie Cocktail, and you have an unbeatable recipe for the ultimate leisure destination.

Post-Modern Tiki Bars

After the 1970’s, tiki bars fell out of fashion. They were inauthentic, no longer “cool” or “cosmopolitan.” What was once alluring because it was new and faintly exotic became hopelessly domestic and outdated. It became gauche to build a tiki hut or build a tiki bar.

However, gradually, as the 20th century merged into the 21st, the common opprobrium heaped upon the tiki bar lifted. Post-modernity looks with skepticism at any attempt to create an “objective” point of view. It revels in images and ideas that once were fashionable but that now appear “cheesy” and “outdated,” in part because these conform its thesis that the meaning of all images is subjective and relative to its time period.

Thus, delightful tiki bar, with its thatch roofs, woven mats, fanciful “tiki god” mugs and fake palm trees, has had something of a renaissance. Now, everyone wants a tiki bar–not just to go to on vacation, but to have in his or her own rec room, basement, or backyard. People who like tiki bars are aware that they might be seen by some as “cheesy,” but love them anyway, in part because of the liberation that they represent from always having to be “cool.” Build a tiki bar, and you will convey to all of your friends the message of how free-spirited and fun-loving you are.

A tiki bar just isn’t a tiki bar without that characteristic palm tree-looking tiki thatch covering every conceivable roof-like surface. Without tiki bar thatch, your “tiki bar” is just some bar that serves tropical drinks. If your home bar has is decorated with tiki masks and boasts a supply of tiki mugs in which to serve tropical drinks, but doesn’t have thatch covering at least one surface, it looks jarring.

Browse our Tiki Thatch

For an outdoor tiki hut, thatch is even more necessary. With an indoor tiki-themed bar, you at least have the excuse that thatch roofs “aren’t really necessary” indoors (although everyone will know you are just making excuses–tiki bars are about looks, not utility). With an outdoor tiki hut, you don’t even have that sad excuse.

Covering The Subject Of Thatch

What is thatch? It is only the world’s first building material. Straw, heather, and in the Polynesian islands, dried palm leaves, have been layered together and waterproofed to create warm, water-resistant, low-cost, sustainable roofs for thousands of years. People have been making thatched roofs since before they could write.

In the context of a tropical tiki bar, it’s practical to use thatch to cover a sun umbrella or palapa (a type of roofed structure held up by four or more poles but without any walls, intended for giving shade). Thatch’s great thermal insulation means that, not only will thatched-roof houses stay warm in winter, but people sitting under thatched palapas will stay cool in summer.

The Aesthetics of Thatch

Aside from its cost-effectiveness and its effectiveness at protection from the sun (possibly not as much of an issue, if you’re trying to build a tiki bar at home), thatch has great aesthetic properties that make it indispensable to a tropical-themed place of leisure. A thatched roof looks casual and natural. People like the fact that a thatched roof is made out of the same material as things that actually grow in the earth. Why?

Is it because everyone actually cares so much about the environment all of a sudden? Maybe, but the real reason probably has more to do with the basic aesthetic principle of “things must match.” People often express an urge to “get away from civilization” because of its perceived artificiality. Civilization clashes with what everyone really perceives to be the true nature of reality–which is, “nature,” in the sense of forests and palm trees and plants.

We love nature, but we need civilization. Modern people feel that they are simply incapable of living in nature, without any of the “artificial” incursions of civilization–and they probably are right. Even farming is, to some extent, “artificial.” However, when people see that boundary between nature and civilization blur just a little bit–as in the thatched roof of a tiki bar–they begin to relax just a little bit. It is the kind of good, relaxed feeling that makes one want to sit back with a tropical cocktail.

Commerically Available Tiki Thatch

For these reasons, thatched roofs have been an indispensable part of the tiki bar look since tiki bars first appeared. These days, if you want to build a tiki bar, you don’t even have to thatch it yourself–you can buy rolls of tiki thatch buy the foot

If you see a Polynesian-inspired grass hut, with its characteristic roof made of layered palm leaves, you will automatically assume think “tropical vacation.” If you see a real palm hut, complete with leaves, supported by a handsome cypress or cedar frame, in somebody’s patio, yard, or poolside, you will probably be somewhat impressed. Only “real” bars and themed outdoor restaurants get to have a tropical hut, right? Or the very rich?

Wrong. A grass hut, such as you would find at a commercial tiki-themed bar, is actually relatively inexpensive to build. “Real” grass huts are relatively inexpensive to build. Think about it: their low cost and ease of construction was the very reason that grass huts were traditionally used in the tropics, where the idea of the tiki bar takes its inspiration in the first place. There’s something inexpressibly charming about being able to put together such a low-cost, comfortable, distinctive-looking shelter out of inexpensive, readily available materials.

Frame First

The easiest way to build a Polynesian-style grass hut for your next tiki party (or if you want to have a permanent tiki bar by your poolside) is to build the frame first, and to build it out of wood. You can get common materials such as pine and directly from your local hardware store. For the parts that require sturdier woods are, such as cypress or cedar, contact a lumber company. Alternatively, you can buy tiki “kits” from online suppliers, which come pre-made with all of the parts you need. Whether you choose to build from a kit, or build by yourself, you can create almost any kind of structure you could dream of–a table shaded by a huge tiki umbrella, a palapa, a hut, a tent, an actual full-service bar covered by a snazzy tiki roof, or even thatch-covered a DJ’s booth.

A Thatch Roof Gives Tiki Structures Their Distinctive Look

Once you have a frame in place, it’s time to add that which will give your tropical hut its characteristic appearance: a thatched roof. The thatched roof may be “primitive,” but it’s actually a surprisingly useful building material. It will ensure all who sit beneath it cool under the hot sun, and shelter from rain when it is cold. People don’t realize that thatched palm leaves actually offer a lot of water resistance. A well-made thatched roof can last up to 7 rainy winters. For this, you have the option of either purchasing palm leaves and learning to weave them yourself–or buying ready-made rolls of thatched palm leaves. The one advantage that modern thatch has over its ancient predecessor? For your modern tiki grass hut, you can buy rolls of palm thatch that have been treated with fire-retardant chemicals.

If you’ve already decided to build or obtain a bar from which to serve drinks at home, why stop there? Why not go all-out and put together a bamboo tiki bar in your own home.

Resurgence Of Tiki Culture

Tiki bars–that is, drinking establishments with a Polynesian motif that involved palm trees and bamboo and thatch furniture–used to be extremely popular in the United States. They went out of fashion during the 1970’s, but these days, like all things “retro,” they are experiencing a resurgence in popularity.

However, the way in which tiki bars are popular today is somewhat different from the way in which they were popular during the years 1947-1970. In the past, the tiki style was primarily confined to commercial drinking establishments and restaurants, especially in popular resort destinations such as Hawaii. These days, although tiki bars and restaurants still enjoy some of their former popularity, tiki has become an even more popular home decoration scheme. Tiki mugs are collectible items, tiki masks are considered ironically “hip” home decorations, and, in general, tiki party accessories a way to show off your individual good taste–your ability to know that something is “uncool” but to enjoy it nonetheless.

The Home Tiki Bar

Given all of these facts, what is the ultimate home tiki accessory? The ultimate way to show your guests your sense of taste, and a good time, all at once? It is the bamboo tiki bar–not in the sense of a commercial drinking establishment, but in the sense of a little stand with shelves made out of bamboo, with possible space for a mini-refrigerator, from which you can serve exotic, alcoholic, rum-based drinks with names like “Sex on the Beach” or “Death on the Islands” (that last one does not exist–yet!).

The bamboo tiki bar is an extremely versatile entertainment accessory. You can either build or buy these semi-portable structures, ranging in length from 3 feet and 4 feet, to 8 feet, and even to as long as 14 feet. If you properly season the bamboo to protect it from wind and water, you can have an outdoor tiki bar to use in your backyard. This is especially exciting if you also own a pool (warning: be responsible and avoid going swimming after you’ve imbibed). If you don’t have a big enough yard, or simply want to be a little paradoxical, you can build your home tiki bar indoors. It can still have the thatched roof–an homage to the absurdity and delight of tiki culture.

The main two things to keep in mind when buying or building a bamboo tiki hut bar is to, first, make sure that you are using real bamboo and, second, make sure the bamboo has been treated with appropriate chemicals if you plan to keep the bar outside. A tiki bar made of plastic just doesn’t have that exciting authentic, festive look of a bamboo tiki bar.

Bamboo wall covering is essential if you really want to ramp up the authenticity of your tiki-themed basement or rec room, or if you just want an attractive, “natural” look for the walls in your house (or outside your house, for that matter). That is because bamboo is perhaps the quintessential construction material of the Pacific islands.

Browse our Bamboo Wall Covering

Why Bamboo?

As a construction material, Bamboo has been renowned in East and South Asia, and the Pacific Islands, for millennia. It is relatively light, durable, and–most importantly of all–it grows at a super-fast rate of as much as 3-4 feet per day. That kind of growth is is almost visible to the naked eye. Bamboo is also extremely hardy. It can also grow virtually anywhere, whether high in the freezing Himalayan mountains, or in the heat of sub-Saharan Africa. It can grow as far north as Sakhalin (latitude 50 degrees N) or as far south as Chile (latitude 47 degrees S). What that means in practice is that residents of the warm Pacific Islands could (and still can) afford to make basically every building out of bamboo.

Outside of the Pacific Islands covering your walls with bamboo will give your interior that subtle but unmistakable look that is associated with the South Pacific. Visitors entering an interior with bamboo-covered walls may find themselves calmed and thinking of the tropics without quite knowing why.

Bamboo Wall Covering Options

Bamboo is an extremely versatile building material, and bamboo wall coverings come in several forms. First, you can purchase flat slats or bricks that are made of bamboo. These can be up to 9 feet in length, and are usually supposed to adhere to your wall with glue. You can also attach them to the wall with molding going along the wall’s top and bottom. Covering your wall with bamboo slats is similar to having a brick facade, except, of course, the facade is made out of bamboo.

Second, you can buy actual half-sections of bamboo trunk. The insides of these half-sections is filled with foam. These pieces of bamboo trunk are then nailed, glued, or screwed to the wall.

However, all the above options take a long time to install, and may look too “formal” for a fun, tiki bar setting. For a tiki bar, the best wall covering option is to buy woven bamboo mats by the foot. Mats? Yes. Bamboo can be cut into flexible strips that are then woven to make a sturdy, flexible, yet basically impenetrable barrier. After the mat is woven, the bamboo strips are treated with a variety of chemicals to make them water and fire-resistant. Bamboo mats are economic and versatile. They can be ordered in any size, and be made to cover your wall in a matter of hours. They also look truly casual, yet authentic–perfect for a tiki bar. Thus, for tiki bars, woven bamboo mats are the best kind of bamboo wall covering.

The Basics: Thatch, Weaves, and Bamboo

The basic components of a convincing tiki bar that will surround your guests in the proper atmosphere are palm-thatched roofs (such as you would see on traditional Polynesian roofs), woven bamboo mats, and bamboo poles. These are the “brick and mortar” of putting together a tiki bar. Any surface that goes on top of where people are sitting or standing, such as the roof of a the bar area (if you’re building a little “tiki shack”) or a sun umbrella, should be covered in palm thatch. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you have to pay contractors to thatch the roof of your bar. Thatch is available in easy-to-install rolls that you can just unroll and use to cover a basic skeleton structure made of wood. Woven mats go great on floors, as a kind of tropical rug, or on walls. They are comfortable to touch and let in a little bit of warm, tropical breeze while keeping out the wind. If you don’t live in a tropical climate, don’t worry. You can buy woven mats by the foot and use them to line an ordinary wall. The woven mats that you can buy commercially are made with thick-woven strips of bamboo–much like the traditional ones you would see on a Polynesian island, except treated with various substances to make them stronger and more durable.

Bamboo is an excellent construction material because it can come in another form. What could be an aesthetically superior complement to a woven bamboo mat than a sign held up by a bamboo pole? The sign could be simple-looking, perhaps wooden, and hand-painted to fit in with the tiki aesthetic. “[insert your name]’s Tiki Bar,” it could say. But don’t stop there! Bamboo poles, in combination with woven bamboo, could also be used to make delightful tiki furniture for your bar. This, too, can be purchased commercially. Is there anything more playful than the combination of rustic and modern found in a bamboo CD holder, containing, perhaps, your collection of marimba music?

Get Fancier: Tiki Masks And More

Once you have established your tiki bar’s underlying structure of bamboo and thatch, you can really start the best part of decorating: choosing individual tiki accessories. You must, of course, start with the classics that have existed in tiki bars since the 1930’s: tiki masks. According to Maori legend, Tiki is actually the first human being on earth–similar to the Judeo-Christian Adam. Tiki masks are originally inspired by traditional Polynesian woodcarvings. To “western” eyes, they tend to look imposing and exotic, and they are an indispensable part of tiki bar decor. Many “tiki masks” today aren’t really masks–just giant woodcarvings. You can use tiki masks creatively: buy a couple, put a board over them (preferably made from the same type of wood), and you’ve got a tiki bench.

Other tiki accessories and tiki bar supplies you can buy include tiki mugs (in which to serve colorful, rum-based drinks), artificial palm trees, and fiberglass tropical fish to mount on your walls.

How 2 renovate an Edwardian home with contemporary interior design colours

This article will explain how to recognise some Edwardian interior design features. Lists of the colours and detailing used in Edwardian homes will be included. Some tips on how contemporary interior design selections can be made to enhance yet keep the integrity of the house intact will be discussed.

Firstly determine design features

The first thing is to determine the interior design features of the house. Many houses are said to be a certain style. But when the details of the house are surveyed they often reveal a mix of styles. This is especially so in residential interior design.

Edwardian homes were first created in the early 1900s in England. King Edward took the English throne in 1901. He had a short reign of nine years. The style was influenced by the Queen Anne a style of architecture and interior decoration popular in England from about 1700 to 1720. The style became popular around the world. The US, Australia and other countries used the features of Queen Anne to create a number of interior design variations of the style.

How to recognise the exterior features of the Edwardian house

Walls

  • Usually of red faced brick

Roof

  • Slate with terracotta edging or Marseilles terracotta tiles
  • In country areas of Australia corrugated iron roofing was used and painted a tile red colour
  • Broken roof lines with many gables

Chimney

  • Red brick chimney stacks with brick corbels and motifs
  • Terracotta chimney pot with hat

Paint colours

  • Shades of green or cream to buff were the most popular outdoor colour schemes
  • Mid buff and beige was also a common colour combination during this era
  • Deep Indian Red was used on window sills

Doors

  • Often had many panels painted in red oxide or forest green with
  • Asymmetrical sidelights

Windows

  • Double Hung
  • Leadlight windows
  • Colourful stained glass in Art Nouveau patterns
  • Window sashes were often painted cream

Gutters

  • Gutters and down pipes were painted in darker colours

Veranda

  • Floors were either cement render, encaustic tiles or ttessellated tiles
  • Veranda brackets were usually painted off white

The interior design features of the Edwardian bathroom

The bathrooms of the Edwardian era were usually simple affairs. Walls were tiled with small white rectangular tiles laid in a bricklike pattern. Floor tiles were often white mosaic tiles, with feature tiles of black. You can find an image of an example of an Edwardian bathroom at the Creative Buzzing

A list of Edwardian bathroom features

Floor

  • Small mosaic white tiles
  • Tessellated tiles in octagonal and other shapes in a number of different patterns
  • Black and white tiles in checker board patterns
  • Marble

Walls

  • Small white rectangular tiles in brick like fashion

Vanity

  • Timber cabinets or wash basins on legs
  • Sink White porcelain or enamelled cast iron

Bath

  • White porcelain or enamelled cast iron often free standing

WC

  • Toilets were placed in separate room
  • Timber seats and cisterns or decorative cast iron cisterns

Shower

  • Attached above bath with semi circular surround
  • Separate shower area place on flat porcelain or marble slab with water proof curtain
  • Huge shower rose and semicircular pierced piping
  • Heated towel rails

The wall above the tiling, the cornice, ceiling and joinery were usually painted white. Sometimes a dado placed about 2100mm from the floor was used and painted in the BS381 107 colour called strong blue or harbor blue.

Renovating the Edwardian bathroom

When working on a heritage building it is best to honor the integrity of the house. This can be done while at the same time bringing an up to the minute interior design look. Edwardian bathrooms tended to be small. So using white wall tiles in a rectangular shape in a larger size would work well with the style of the original bathroom yet have a contemporary twist. The colour of the floor tiles and feature wall tiles could pick up the colours of any existing stained glassed windows.

Using feature wall tiles in horizontal lines and painting the ceiling a darker colour would make the small bathroom with high ceilings appear wider. Painting all the joinery and cabinet doors white, a white bath and a white sink would also add to this illusion of more space. Matching the colour of the bench top to the darker floor tile will also create another horizontal line. Some sample boards have been created and can be viewed on the Creative Buzzing

Renovating Edwardian bedrooms

The interior design in bedrooms during the Edwardian era often had floral stripe wall papers in green, blue and pink. For example Coles & Son’s Rose du Barri a floral stripe pattern in shades of green, blue and pink was popular. Also popular were the Cole’s Moirés wallpapers.

Interior decorators during the Edwardian era painted walls in the bedroom in a number of different colours; pink beige or apricot or milkshake or arctic blue. Magnolia was often used on the mouldings as was green with the cornice and ceiling painted white. The joinery in the bedrooms could also be painted a light bronze green or grey green or pale cream. Sometimes these surfaces were French polished or varnished. Listed below are some British Standard colours used during this era.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Metal Roofing Materials

is fast gaining popularity because of the various benefits. The National Roofing Contractor’s Association has conducted studies that indicate that over the last ten years homeowners and homebuilders have increasingly chosen metal as the preferred roofing material. This increased demand has led to a greater distribution of metal roofing material in the market.

Today’s metal roofing is very different from the roofs of the tin sheds and barns of the past. You can now install metal roofs that are very attractive and come in a variety of designer shapes, colors and material. Latest technology has allowed many novel qualities like thermal reflectivity, increased corrosion resistance and weight reduction to be imparted to metal roofing. These roofs are fire resistant and extremely durable. Once installed, metal roofs can last up to the life of the building. They seal out water very effectively and are able to shed snow very easily. Being strong and rigid, they are able to resist high winds and rot, mold, mildew and pests/insects as well. Their longevity is supported by strong warranties of twenty to fifty years provided by metal roofing manufacturers.

With the use of new technology and material like aluminum, zinc, and other alloys used for manufacturing metal roofing, the overall weight has reduced considerably. It thus exerts much less strain on the roof structure. Some extremely lightweight metal shingles can be applied to an existing roof without tearing it down. This way it lends added support to the existing structure and provides an impressive ‘new look’ roof without any substantial gain in weight.

Thermal reflective coating on metal roofing allows very little heat from the sun to radiate into the interior of the building during the daytime. During nighttime they also let less heat escape through the roof, greatly increasing energy efficiency and help to substantially cut down energy bills.

To provide aesthetic appeal metal roofs can be made to resemble a variety of different roofing materials. Available in a number of textures and colors, metal roofs look beautiful and can be integrated into buildings incorporating all types of architectural designs and color schemes.

Metal roofs require much less time for installation as compared to other type of roofs. This lets the job be satisfactorily completed within a relatively short time and at a much lesser cost. Contractors, laborers etc. disturb the privacy of the occupants of the house for a shorter time too.

However, like any other roof, metal roofs also have some disadvantages, which should be considered before deciding to install one. The first disadvantage is the high cost of installation. The high cost however can be justified if the homeowner plans to occupy the house for a long period.

The process of installation is also complex requiring professional services for proper installation. Possibility of leaks also exists in case panel joints are not made watertight or in case the screws are not properly fixed. If the roof is not securely fastened, it can suffer wind damage. A metal roof can be quite noisy with the drumming of rainfall and hail. Flying hail and debris can also cause damage to the roof by denting and scratching.

Getting a New Roof? Weigh Up your Roofing Material Options First

When it comes time to replace your old roof – or have one put onto a new construction – you have a number of different roofing materials to choose from. It pays to do a little research here before you make your choice as certain roofing materials are more suited to certain situations than others. Here is my guide to some of the most commonly used roofing materials.

bipv1.jpg

Asphalt Shingle Roofing

This is, by far, the most commonly used and most economical roofing choice nationwide. In many cases it can be half the cost of other options and that fact alone can be the deciding factor for many people. When it comes to appearance asphalt shingle roofing is not always the most aesthetically pleasing but it is tough, durable and should last for years if properly installed.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is especially good for homes that are located in areas that experience heavy snowfall.

There are several different types of metal roofing to choose from. Standard metal roofing comes in large sheets that attach to the decking of your roof but metal roof tiles and metal roof shingles are also gaining in popularity, although they do tend to be considerably more expensive than metal roofing panels.

Whatever form of metal roofing you choose it is tough enough to last for decades and many homeowner’s insurance companies will actually give you a discount on your policy for having such a roof because of the extra safety metal-topped houses carry. The appearance of a metal roof is not to everyone’s taste but it is an option well worth considering.

Tile Roofing Materials

Tile roofs are often the most attractive, yet also most expensive, option available to homeowners having a new roof installed. Traditional tile roofing, which is generally an attractive burnt orange in color, is a great favorite of the southwest; its appearance is unique, but its performance may be an even bigger draw for many homeowners as it can last for up to 70 years.

In areas where hurricanes, tornados, hailstorms or heavy snow and ice accumulations are an issue though a tile roof is probably not the best choice as the potential for damage, both to the roof and your home from falling roof tiles, is rather great.

If you are considering replacing an old roof with a tiled roof it is also important that your roofer ensures that the structure of your home itself can handle all the extra weight that a tile roof will add or the results could be disastrous to say the very least.

Other Roofing Material Options

Cedar Shingles

Cedar shingles are more expensive than their asphalt cousins but are undoubtedly more attractive. As long as they are well maintained and resealed every few years they should also last just as long.

Concrete Shingles

Concrete shingles have risen to premier roofing status in the past few years. Why? Because they are virtually indestructible and come in a wide range of attractive shapes and sizes. Yes, concrete roofing is an expensive option but it is also probably the last roof you will ever need to buy.

Different Types of Roof Truss Design and Their Benefits

A roof truss also called rafter is a roof with one or more triangular units which are connected at a joint. It takes up the weight of the entire roof together with the walls of a structure. It also protects the walls from bending due to the weight exerted on them from the roof. The roof truss design of your house will depend immensely on your structure. Most trusses are made of aluminum, timber and wood. There are different designs of a roof truss. Some of them are quite simple while others are complicated and hard to understand. Some of the designs include Kingpost, the Queenpost, fink, double Howe, scissors and Cambered roof trusses.

Kingpost roof truss design:

It is also known as a crown post and mostly has two main rafters, a tie beam and perpendicular king post. If you need to have a stylish and large place, the kingpost roof truss will be your best option. It can be used for smaller bridges and is less expensive compared to other trusses. When you choose this type of truss, you surely get value for money.

Scissors roof truss design:
This is usually used in cathedrals whereby the truss uses lower cords. These cords are sloped inwards to forming a shape of a hang glider. The benefits of scissors roof truss design are that it does away with the need to use a bearing beam and wall.

The queenpost roof truss design:
A queenpost design has a slanting support on each side of the main post. That makes queenpost truss one of the strongest designs because it supports the weight evenly and in a balanced manner. Due to its strength, it comes in handy for places where there is a lot of snow or if you need to use heavy roofing materials. Such materials may include aluminum and other metal related materials.

Fink roof truss:
The most important thing about fink is that you need to get the right size for your roof. You can buy one that has already been manufactured but you have to be sure of the measurements. The advantage with fink is that you will not have to go through the pain of making it yourself. It makes your work easier and faster. All you will have to do is to get the correct measurements, and mount it within a short time meaning your work will be minimized by the manufacturer. The other benefit is that you will not have to employ someone to make it for you and that means you will cut costs. This is one of the most convenient roof truss designs in the market today.

Double Howe truss design:
The Howe design has a main post which is normally at the center and other posts which stem from it to the end of the truss. A normal Howe is supposed to be 36 feet but a double one is 60 feet. There are others which are as long as 80 feet in length. They are also among the strongest trusses in the market today and can fit both small and large houses.

Now that you know the different roof truss designs things should be a lot clearer on which option is right for you.

The advantage withfink is that you will not have to go through the pain of making it yourself.

Roofing Tips – Understanding the 3 Types of Asphalt Shingles

The roof is one of the most important parts of a house. It is the first line of defense against a myriad of elements that beat out siding and windows. Because an improperly installed roof can be detrimental to a structure, familiarizing yourself with your roofing options is important before starting work on any project. In this post, we will be looking at the three main types of asphalt shingles you have to choose from.

Three-tab organic

Simply put, this is the standard option. It is available in three foot strip showing 3 tabs. These shingles have a lifespan of 20 years in most areas though it is not uncommon for them to last for up to 30 years. The shingles are made up of thin fiber sheet which are made from wood and/or paper composite. The sheet is immersed in soft asphalt cement and run through a roller to form the roofing (dakwerken) shingle. It is then recoated with heavier asphalt. Ceramic granule coating is added to add strength.

Three-tab fiberglass

This is almost identical to the three-tab organic only that it uses fiberglass matt in place of the wood/ paper foundation. Fiberglass matt doesn’t take up a lot of asphalt during pressing and roller processes. As a result, the material is lighter and much easier to install. It further offers more protection against tear. However, roof renovation (dakrenovatie) is common when three-tab fiberglass is used in areas with high winds. The material easily rips off. Additionally, since these shingles don’t have a lot of asphalt, they get brittle over time.

Architectural shingles

Often times, these materials are referred to as laminated shingles. During manufacturing, two layers of shingles are used. The material is hence heavier and less susceptible to high winds. They can withstand winds of up to 90 miles per hour. These roofing shingles further give a three-dimensional wood shingle appearance to a structure thereby increasing curb appeal.

Your choice of any of the three roofing options will depend on where you live, your budget and the impression you wish to create. Make sure you hire a great installer to help with the project.

With over two decades of experience as a roofing company, Dakwerken Apers is one of the best companies you can contact for your roofing and roof renovation needs.
